A Republican Racist? No way.

Three former college football teammates of Sen. George Allen say that the Virginia Republican repeatedly used an inflammatory racial epithet and demonstrated racist attitudes toward blacks during the early 1970s.

Isn’t it stunning that this backwoods jackass could reach the top echelon of the republican party, and was even mentioned as a possible 2008 presidential candidate? Of course not. How did republicans conquer the south in the first place? They provided an ideal outlet for pent-up white guy angst after George Wallace shut down operations.

Has there ever been a better wedge issue than race? It worked for Bush 41 with Willy Horton, it worked for Bush 43 when he push-polled McCain in South Carolina and it will work again for the 2008 republican presidential nominee, whether it is this white male jackass or another one.
