MSFT + MTV = ???
Now the cable network group that helped popularize music videos two decades ago is entering the online music fray with URGE, a new service that makes its public beta debut on Wednesday.
MSFT appears to be hitching its musical future to MTV with Urge, coming Wednesday. This is a typical misreading of the musical landscape by the tone-deaf toads in Redmond.
MTV’s influence on the musical tastes of America has been waning for a decade and was sent into a spiraling decline with the introductions, chronologically, of Napster, iTunes and MySpace. MTV is a channel of grade-B reality shows, with a dose of music news every hour or so. They traded their cultural relevance years ago for the easily calculated ratings of 30-minute shows and will never again command the attention of music buyers the way they did in the 1980’s.
