WSJ NEWS ALERT: Rumsfeld to Resign as Defense Secretary

After getting thrashed at the polls, you would expect some changes fairly quickly, but this is ridiculous:

Republican officials say Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is stepping down. The move comes amid growing dissatisfaction with the war in Iraq and Republican loss of the House and possible loss of the Senate.

By ridiculous, I, of course mean “good”. This seems more than symbolic to me. Many of the wacky, stubborn ideas that have bogged our forces down in the Iraqi Civil War have emanated from the Donald. His ideas didn’t work and won’t work in the future. For the White House, it is better to replace him now and make it look like a concession to the new reality. That’s one less real concession they’ll need to make later.
